About Pawsitive Project

Who are we?

This website was made by Sohyun Oh, a sophomore student from Seoul Foreign School, as the product of her personal project required for the IB curriculum. According to the IB, the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) Personal Project is an independent, year-long, self-directed inquiry completed by 10th-grade students, culminating in a product, service, or outcome. For my personal project, I decided to explore the animal welfare issues in Korea as a strong animal advocate.

Our Story

As a kid who had countless interactions with animals, I have been a strong animal advocate. Eager to help them, I researched on the internet as a middle schooler, and faced the huge barrier of “Only adults allowed.”

I was extremely frustrated with not being able to help animals directly at shelters simply due to my age. Besides the hands-on volunteering, the main way shelters allowed the minors to contribute was through funding or donations. But as a middle schooler with limited financial resources, the regular donations were not the best way for me to contribute, and I did not know what other ways I could be involved beyond donating money.

However, this frustration sparked my curiosity about how young people like me can make a meaningful difference. I began to have a strong urge to spread awareness about these animal welfare issues and research about the alternative ways the students can support the shelters, so more people can ease the multiple animal welfare issues in Korea.

Our process

As my product goal was a website built using Wix about the current challenges the Korean animal shelters are facing, and alternative ways the students can support them, I first decided to reach out to a local animal shelter, which was Shiloh's Sanctuary. Then I gathered the data and the interview, while actually performing the five alternative ways I proposed on the website.
